As an American author (for the Kindle as well) living in Christchurch, I am the proud new owner of a US domestic Kindle, shipped from family in the US. I purchased this Kindle 48 hours before the release of the international version, but since NZ is not on the air yet, it presents no problem. I have had the Kindle about four days, downloading books via PC and USB cable to the Kindle. When NZ joins the availability list for wireless, I will probably buy the international version and present a family member my US edition. As an inveterate reader, this method has proven excellent so far. I used to struggle with a small HP PDA, the screen being far too small. The Kindle is excellent. Would be happy to answer any questions for readers of this forum, via my website email, www.gordonryan.com. Cheers,

Territorial Restrictions still block most titles in Australia too Martin, unless the global titles aren't due to have their restrictions lifted till the 19th.
It would surprise me if Amazon release the Kindle into our markets without significant global access as customer frustration would be huge along with the associated backlash.

Yes, I was a bit presumptive in my haste to get this story filed. New Zealand is indeed off the list despite AT&T data roaming agreements in place but that's only part of the story. Presume it's either rights or roaming issues. That said, I should probably stop presuming:-) Will let you know as soon as I find out something more definitive.

Certainly New Zealand, along with Canada, Cuba and a number of others appear to be excluded from this, and this seems to have been confirmed by NBR's Chris Keall who talked to an Amazon rep. http://www.nbr.co.nz/opinion/chris-keall/kindle-christmas-australia-not-nz
