Well, there are many takes on how the new royalty schemes should or should not work. From a philosophical point of view, I would hesitate to wander into the realm of what is fair and what is not, in regards to the new S & S royalty arrangements.

What one might want to do, however, is simply to compare old retail price arrangements with the new net price deals, and see whether or not they are beneficial to the authors and publishers, or not.

You write "It’s hard to see how a long term move to tie ebook prices to p-book prices makes any sense for the industry’s success". My comment would be simply: "I don't think anyone suggests that." In other words, the issue is not whether we should have royalties based on list prices, but about the exact percentage the new net-price based royalties should be.

Thanks,
Bo, Editor

Interesting. Reading through the links I ended up with this press release from one of my favourite authors, Harlan Ellison, who is suing Paramount Studios over his famous Star Trek episode. See the full press release here, it's a masterpiece. http://www.ereads.com/excerpts/2009/03/full-text-of-harlan-ellisons-statement.html.
